Hiking in La Alberca

Hiking in La Alberca

La Alberca is a very traditional style European town, however it is not very traditional in terms of it being a Spanish town. It is very cute though. People have been living in La Alberca since before the Romans took over Spain. Legend has it that the women of the town in 1465 defeated the Portuguese troops and kept the Portuguese flag that was being carried by the troops. This is still on display in one of the many museums in La Alberca. In 1940, La Alberca was declared a protected historical city, so today when you visit La Alberca you see exactly what you would have seen hundreds of years ago. The population of this very unique town is 1105 people.

The town of La Alberca is absolutely adorable and it definitely isn't something that you expect to pop up from the Spanish scenery.

Every Building is historical. No new buildings are allowed to be build in the city walls of La Alberca.

I have been thinking that the cobblestone in Salamanca and Madrid have been bad to walk on, but those streets have nothing on the streets of La Alberca. The streets seem like the people making them just sprinkled rocks randomly on the ground, some round side up others flat side up. It definitely makes for some difficult walking.

The Hermitage of San Blas is this building. It was used as a worship place for travelers in Roman times. Until the mid 1900's behind this place of worship was the town cemetery.

The Hermitage of San Marcos is left in ruins now, was constructed in 1703, but was too far away from the town to be maintains.

It still gets me how much the landscape of Spain looks like California. I really did think Spain was going to look more exotic to me.
